Your 1-Night Merzouga Desert Camp Program

Here is exactly what your Merzouga overnight camp experience looks like, from arrival to departure.

DAY 1 – MERZOUGA VILLAGE → SAHARA DESERT CAMP

We meet you at our hotel in Merzouga village, where you can leave your car safely in our free parking lot. Before we start, you can also use the bathroom and take some time to prepare. Try to arrive around 4:30 PM. That way, you have plenty of time to enjoy the camel ride and still reach the dunes in time for sunset.

Leave your main luggage safely at our hotel. You suggest taking only a small backpack with what you need for one night in the desert. Your guide stays with you from the very beginning until the end of the experience.

From the village, the camel ride to our Standart desert camp takes around 1 hour. Along the way, soak up the beautiful Erg Chebbi dunes and the peaceful Sahara landscape. On the way to the camp, you will stop in the dunes for photos. After a 1-hour ride, you will arrive at the Standard Berber Desert Camp, which is set up in the middle of the Erg Chebbi dunes

Your guide will show you your tent, drop off your backpack, and take some time to relax, or you can also try sandboarding near the camp; it is fun and easy, even for beginners. And enjoy the sunset over the dunes. After that, the camp staff will welcome you with traditional Moroccan mint tea, which is the perfect way to unwind after the camel ride.

For dinner in the evening, a typical Moroccan menu will be prepared either in the dining tent or even outdoors. Your dinner will include harira soup, a salad, a dish of chicken or vegetable tagine with bread, and fruits as dessert. If there are some special diet requirements for you, just let us know in advance and we’ll try to fulfill them.

After dinner, the camp team will gather by the campfire and perform some Berber dances with Berber drums and traditional music. You can either dance, clap hands, or just relax. At night, due to the absence of any lighting from the city, the stars will be very bright; you can observe the Milky Way. You will sleep in your tent, where you will find a mattress, blanket, and pillow. With good weather, you may move your bed outside and sleep under the stars.

DAY 2 – DESERT CAMP → MERZOUGA VILLAGE

On the second day of your Merzouga overnight camp experience, you will wake up early, and we recommend 1:30 before sunrise. The time varies based on the season, and it will be informed to you the previous night. You will dress warmly and go to the nearby dune to watch the sunrise. It will be another memorable experience when the warm light of dawn gradually spreads over the dunes while everything around you is still silent and peaceful.

After sunrise, you will return to the camp for breakfast. The meal is simple but satisfying, typically including bread, jam, butter, cheese, coffee, tea, and sometimes eggs or small pancakes. Once you have finished eating, you will have some free time to take final pictures and prepare your small backpack and get ready for the return journey.

At around 8:30 AM, you’ll get back on the camels and start the hour journey back to the village of Merzouga. Everything seems totally different because of the early morning lighting, creating long shadows and soft colors. You’ll be escorted back by your guide. At the hotel where you’ll find yourself after reaching the village, you’ll retrieve your luggage and take a wash if given a chance.
